Artwork Title: This is a Crime
Type: Mixed Media / Digital Artwork
Tools: Scanner, Photoshop, Lightroom & Adobe Illustrator
This piece addresses the harrowing issue of honor-based violence against women in Iraq. It was inspired by the tragic loss of my dear friend Teba, who was killed as a result of oppressive societal expectations. Her story shook me deeply—and through this work, I wanted to hold space for that pain and the injustice she endured.
The Arabic phrase featured in the artwork translates to “this is a crime,” serving as a direct confrontation of the silence that often surrounds these acts. I used scanography as a technique to visually express the moment I learned she was gone—raw, distorted, and intimate.
Though creating this was emotionally difficult, it became a form of healing. Through this artwork, I honor her memory, remind myself of my own resilience, and continue to document the truth of my experiences. My art is my voice—one that speaks when words fall short.
